Descendants of Scottish immigrants to South Africa raised the Cape Town Highlanders in 1885. On 24 April of the same year, their services were accepted – since then, this date has always been celebrated as the regiment's official birthday.
The Cape Town Highlanders served in the Boer War and subsequently renamed the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn’s Own Cape Town Highlanders in 1906
They also served in the Senussi Campaign in North Africa and then went to France and won 15 Battle Honours including 1st Somme and Ypres.
During World War 2, the CTH were part of the 1st South African Division and served in the Western Desert of North Africaand in Italy.
They earned 20 Battle Honours including: S.W. Africa 1915, El Alamein, and Casino. Early Honours included: Bechuanaland 1897, South Africa 1899-1902, and Southwest Africa 1915. Served in Angola in1 976 and then for 23 years in the border war with S.W. Africa (Nambia). Still in service today as The Gonnema Regiment.
